Job Summary
The Biomonitoring Assistant will assist in the implementation of biomonitoring programs in the east sector of Dja Faunal Reserve (DFR) by monitoring wildlife inside east sector of DFR and peripheral zones of the Eastern part of DFR. The jobholder will have experience in fieldwork, data management, and a strong interest in environmental conservation.
This position is based in Lomie, Cameroon. However, depending on priorities and certain service requirements, AWF may transfer the incumbent to any other location where it operates in Cameroon. The position reports to Lomie Biomonitoring Officer.
Responsibilities
Assist in the implementation and coordination of biomonitoring programs in the field within the east sector of DFR.
Conduct fieldwork to collect ecological data and related information on wildlife while respecting designed protocols.
Process and analyze wildlife data by using software programs such as Cyber tracker, SMART, Camera traps and ArcGIS.
Provide support to rangers training programs as scheduled in the east sector of DFR.
Assist in the deployment of anti-poaching strategic and field intervention to fight against poaching through team preparing and planning, debriefing, data downloading and treatment and reporting.
Maintain accurate records of data and samples collected in the field.
Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations and other documents related to biomonitoring programs in the east sector of DFR.
Assist with project management tasks such as scheduling, budget tracking, and communication with stakeholders of the east sector of DFR.
Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations during fieldwork and other activities conducted in the east sector of DFR.
Stay current with scientific literature and research trends in biomonitoring and environmental science.
Provide any other support to the Biomonitoring Officer, Lomie as when possible.
Requirements and skills
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Biology, Ecology, Forestry, Botany, Zoology, Wildlife Management, or related field of study.
At least 2 years’ experience in fieldwork and data collection (mastery of data collection tools, Compass, Android devices and GPS).
Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software programs such as Cyber tracker, SMART, Camera trapping, and QGIS for data management and analysis.
Strong written and verbal communication skills both in French & English.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Willingness to travel and work in remote locations.
Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance.
