PREDICT PROJECT LABORATORY COORDINATOR

Metabiota Cameroon (MCL) is recruiting for a PREDICT LABORATORY COORDINATOR with experience in virology and molecular biology and laboratory management. The position will be based at the Military Health Research Center (CRESAR) Laboratory in Yaoundé technically supported by Metabiota Cameroon.

About the Position:

METABIOTA, is a member of the consortium currently implementing phase 2 of USAID-funded Emerging Pandemic Threats-2 project named "PREDICT-2".  PREDICT aims to improve our understanding of the dynamics of zoonotic disease spillover, evolution, amplification, and spread in order to inform future prevention and control measures.

A successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to excel in a collaborative, intense, and groundbreaking research environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding in global health, disease surveillance, and/or infectious disease topics.

The PREDICT LABORATORY COORDINATOR will perform training, supervision and direct operations regarding sampling, processing, testing and analysis in all areas of the human and animal laboratories under PREDICT project. S/he demonstrates skill and knowledge on all laboratory test systems and teaches and follows Good Clinical Laboratory Practices, quality control requirements and laboratory safety guidelines. S/he must be comfortable working with both in-country and international teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaches, conducts, and oversees all laboratory testing and analysis assigned according to current PREDICT protocols, procedures, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Maintains a high level of precision and accuracy for all laboratory procedures
  • Demonstrates skills and knowledge on all laboratory systems
  • Manages and trains a team of laboratory technicians
  • Oversees procurement and purchasing of laboratory equipment and supplies
  • Oversees routine maintenance and certification of laboratory equipment
  • Teaches and demonstrates Good Clinical Laboratory Practices and Quality Control
  • Responds to technical and logistical problems encountered in the laboratory in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Oversees storage, preparation and shipment of samples to partner laboratories, as needed
  • Performs implementation and training of new study protocols, new instrumentation, and new methodology as needed
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Works with staff to ensure timely and accurate testing and reporting as required programmatically by Metabiota
  • Works with administrative leadership to develop budgets, work plans, and monitor financial performance of laboratory-based component of the PREDICT project
  • Reports progress and provides input on status of deliverables
  • Coordinates with local and international teams, including Global Laboratory Coordinator and Director of Laboratory Sciences of partner organizations.
  • Contributes to manuscript preparation and submission for publication

Qualifications:

Advanced degree in virology or microbiology (with infectious disease background) as well as experience coordinating laboratory research studies. At least 2+ years working on disease surveillance, laboratory sciences, pandemic preparedness, and/or early detection and verification of infectious diseases is highly desirable.

Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in virology, microbiology, molecular biology, or related field preferred
  • Direct experience in pathogen detection through molecular methods
  • Experience in leading or contributing to development of funding opportunities from international funders such as the US Government, European Union, private funders such as foundations (e.g., Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and international multilateral organizations (e.g., Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria)
  • Knowledge of and experience in personnel management
  • Working knowledge of human subject institutional review board procedures and requirements
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and prioritize work with minimal supervision
  • Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, especially within diverse international settings
  • Available to travel domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time
  • Fluent in French and English (written and spoken)

Additional Information:

Duration of Contract: 1 year (renewable) ; Project period : October 1, 2016 - September 30, 2019

Supervisory responsibilities: Candidate will oversee team of laboratory technicians

Travel: Some in country or international travel may be required

Salary and benefits:

  • Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience, within approved program budgets
