Position Summary
The Law Enforcement Intern will support the Senior Officer - Wildlife Law Enforcement in the Faro Landscape by assisting with various law enforcement activities to protect the region’s biodiversity. This role involves working closely with field rangers, the conservation service, and local communities to monitor illegal activities, assist in organizing patrols, and ensure the enforcement of conservation policies. The intern will help gather and analyze data, support reporting efforts, and contribute to wildlife protection activities, all while gaining practical experience in conservation law enforcement.
Key Responsibilities
Data Support: Assist the Senior Officer in the collection, organization, and analysis of law enforcement data, including ranger patrol reports, wildlife crime statistics, and incident records within the Faro Landscape.
SMART Database Management: Help manage and update the SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) database to track ranger patrols and other law enforcement activities.
Patrol Planning: Assist in coordinating and scheduling ranger patrols by analyzing data and identifying priority areas based on intelligence gathered from the field.
Report Preparation: Aid in preparing detailed reports, presentations, and briefings on wildlife protection efforts, including anti-poaching and anti-illegal logging operations in the Faro Landscape.
Research and Best Practices: Conduct research on current law enforcement strategies, identify potential improvements, and suggest best practices for enhancing wildlife law enforcement activities in the region.
Training Support: Help facilitate capacity-building workshops and training programs for rangers and local community members involved in conservation efforts and law enforcement.
Monitoring Effectiveness: Assist in evaluating the success of law enforcement activities by analyzing patrol success rates and identifying areas for improvement.
Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in meetings with local communities, law enforcement agencies, and conservation partners to strengthen coordination and collaboration on wildlife protection efforts.
Confidentiality and Data Security: Ensure the confidentiality and security of sensitive law enforcement data in accordance with established protocols.
General Support: Perform other tasks as assigned by the Senior Officer to enhance the effectiveness of wildlife law enforcement in the Faro Landscape.
Requirements and skills
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, Criminology, Law, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, or a related field.
A strong interest in wildlife law enforcement, conservation management, or community-based conservation is preferred. Previous experience is an advantage.
Familiarity with wildlife conservation laws, wildlife protection policies, and enforcement strategies would be beneficial.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with GIS tools or SMART monitoring systems is a plus.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to process data and provide actionable insights for improved law enforcement efforts.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for preparing reports and interacting with various stakeholders.
Ability to work independently and in a team setting, including in remote areas and field environments.
Willingness and physical readiness to work in rugged outdoor conditions, with the possibility of frequent travel to patrol areas.
A keen eye for detail in data collection, report writing, and analysis to ensure the accuracy and integrity of wildlife protection data.
A deep commitment to biodiversity protection and the long-term conservation of wildlife in the Faro Landscape.
Ability to identify areas of need and propose solutions to improve conservation law enforcement strategies.
Understanding and respect for local communities’ customs and practices, promoting positive engagement with stakeholders.
