Job Description- Power BI Developer
Background: The Center for Health Promotion and Research provides high-quality diagnostic services, undertakes programs to strengthen health provision, and engages in research to increase knowledge and inform policy change. We are seeking a skilled Power BI Developer to join our team, primarily working with health-related data to support our research initiatives and health programs.
Position Summary: The Power BI Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust data visualizations and dashboards using Power BI that research teams, program managers and partners use to track health projects. You will build new dashboards and maintain and extend the existing semantic models so they stay accurate, fast and secure. This is a hands-on role for someone who writes DAX fluently, models data properly, and can explain a dashboard to a clinician. Located in Bamenda, with occasional travel to other regions of 5-15%.
Typical responsibilities and duties, depending on skill set:
· Dashboard and report development: Design, build and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports for health research and programme data, from multiple sources.
· Semantic modelling and DAX: Maintain and extend existing star-schema models. Write, debug and optimise DAX measures, including time intelligence and cumulative indicators.
· Data preparation: Use Power Query (M) to load and shape data from CSV, Excel, SharePoint, REDCap exports and pipeline outputs.
· Quality assurance: Check that every figure in a report reconciles with its source. Document measures and fix data issues with the data management team.
· Deployment and security: Manage workspaces, apps, scheduled refresh and row-level security in the Power BI Service. Keep report changes under version control.
· Monitoring and reporting: Build and update program monitoring dashboards that track indicators, targets and data quality across sites.
· Collaboration: Work with researchers and program staff to turn their questions into clear, usable reports.
· Training and support: Train and support colleagues to use Power BI reports and tools confidently.
- Perform other duties as needed to ensure the success of the activities.
Qualifications (required):
• Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Health Informatics, Statistics or a related quantitative field.
• Experience: At least 3 years of hands-on Power BI development, building and maintaining reports used in production.
• DAX: Strong command of filter context, CALCULATE, iterators and time intelligence, and the ability to debug a measure that returns the wrong number.
• Power Query and modelling: Confident with Power Query (M) and star-schema design, including relationships, cardinality and date tables.
• Power BI Service: Experience with workspaces, apps, scheduled refresh and row-level security.
• Excel: Advanced Excel, including Power Query and Power Pivot.
• Language: Proficient in written and spoken English.
• Working style: Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, attention to detail, and discretion with confidential health data. Able to work independently and in a team.
Qualifications (preferred):
· An active Microsoft Certified Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification (Exam PL-300). This will be weighted heavily in shortlisting. Please include your Microsoft Learn credential verification link.
· Knowledge of Python or R for data cleaning, analysis or automation
· Working knowledge of French
· Experience with health research or programme data, such as TB, HIV, diagnostic studies, REDCap or DHIS2
· Experience with Power BI Projects (PBIP) and Git, or tools such as Tabular Editor and DAX Studio
· Experience training non-technical users
