Position: BACK-UP Medical Provider
Supervisor: Country Director
Position Summary: The United States Peace Corps seeks a Medical Doctor or Nurse Practitioner to serve as a contracted a backup Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO) based in Yaounde. The back-up Medical Provider will deliver clinical care for Peace Corps
Volunteers and Trainees in Cameroon in the absence of a Peace Corps Medical Officer (PCMO) or assist the PCMO during busy
times. The number of days required for this role may vary and may be for 30 non-consecutive days during the year subject to the availability of funds.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The back-up medical provider will deliver direct patient care, referrals to outside medical consultants or facilities such
as hospital or emergency department, depending on the specific in-country arrangements, and assist with administrative
duties and health education when indicated. The back-up medical provider will be available around-the-clock by
telephone or be present in the Peace Corps office health unit. He/she may also be required to provide consultative or
prescriptive services to the Peace Corps PCMOs.
Backup Peace Corps Medical Providers will submit written documentation that describes consultations with Peace
Corps Trainees or Volunteers, and care and treatment prescribed and provided. Diagnoses must be provided to the
Peace Corps Health Unit.
I. Professional qualifications
A. Physician: The back up PCMO shall have a valid, current, active license to practice as a Physician in one of the
50 United States, or country where license was obtained.
It shall be the responsibility of the backup PCMO-Physician to maintain a current valid license to practice medicine
in one of the 50 United States, or country where license was obtained, at all times during the performance period of
this contract while serving as a backup PCMO in any country.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Graduate of accredited school. MDs must be a graduate of a school listed in this link, Foundation for Advancement of

• Current license to practice
• Relevant clinical experience in primary care after medical school
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral /written English.

• Experience in managing mental health issues including counseling of patients
• Experience in training design and presentation of health related material
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook
• Program management, administrative experience
• Ability to work effectively as part of an intercultural team
• Hardworking, reliable and diligent with good inter-personal skills
• Willing to travel to sites in Cameroon
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Must be able to obtain an American visa

Three letters of professional reference. (At least two must be from professional medical colleagues who have directly
observed the applicant in a clinical setting). Letters must be written recently with date written at the top or bottom of the letter.

Photocopy of Academic diplomas. If the candidate is an MD, he or she must be a graduate of a medical school listed on the
following web site: https://search.wdoms.org/ a translated copy of the diploma in English is required. Official translation is not
necessary.
Photocopy of professional licenses. If the license does not have an expiration date, written confirmation must be submitted directly
from the issuing authority. Please note, some countries do not require an actual license; rather, the medical diploma is the license
to practice. If this is the case, the applicant must submit written confirmation issued directly from the professional medical board,
Ministry of Health or other appropriate regulatory authority, establishing that the candidate is properly credentialed for medical practice.
A translated copy of the diploma in English is required. Official translation is not necessary.
