PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Environmental Health (EH) Assistant, under the supervision of the Environmental Health Officer NW, will be responsible for the implementation of Environmental Health/WASH/NFI/Hygiene promotion activities in Northwest Region. S/He will be required to participate in the daily implementation of components of WASH/NFI/hygiene promotion projects, providing an insight into cultural sensitivity and thoroughness of communication to the beneficiary communities, as well as assisting to see that the activities are implemented in an all-inclusive, timely and participatory manner. S/he is required to ensure that both hard and soft components of the EH actions are executed to the required quality respecting standard designs.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management and Implementation:
Implement and monitor EH interventions in health facilities, communities, and partner organizations to ensure compliance with standards and guidelines.
Work with the local Water Department and Hygiene and Sanitation clusters at community levels in identifying, mobilizing and sensitizing target communities for water, sanitation and hygiene promotion activities.
Initiate and create linkages between the communities and the project, the local government extension staff and the target communities in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, promotion.
Train and support health facility staff, community members, and partners in EH practices and behavior change strategies.
Conduct assessments to identify EH needs and develop appropriate action plans to address gaps.
The EH Assistant, play a lead role in mapping out communities for village sanitation improvement.
Assist in the training of Water supply and sanitation committees for the established/rehabilitated/protected water sources.
Participate in collection of useful data, success stories and beneficiary lists as required
Assist in providing useful data for the preparation of monthly/quarterly/annual highlights/ reports and proposals and budgets for donors.
Assist in major repairs and installation of new materials, supplies, machinery and/or equipment.
Conduct water testing and advise accordingly and come up with solutions where need be to improve on water quality and inform communities of its quality.
Continuous follow up of WMC to ensure the effective use of the water point and smooth running of the committee.
Conduct regular monitoring and evaluation of EH projects to track progress, identify challenges, and propose solutions.
Support the Hygiene team in the midterm and annual surveys to understand the impacts of IRC programs with relation to behavior change and health-based indicators.
Follow up all IRC’s Procedures for Security, Finance, Logistics, HR and Administration.
Uphold IRC’s international code of conduct.
Assist in the distribution of NFI/EH vouchers as well as in kind items
Provide technical support in the EH infrastructure development works
Assist EH officer in identifying and conducting detail EH assessments for water points and latrines in the community.
Assist in providing documentation of EH infrastructures and capacity building tools provision activities and timely report to the supervisor.
Effectively mobilize the beneficiary communities and partners in all phases of the project and ensue effective partnership at all levels.
Assist in the follow up of construction works.
Ensure compliance with donor requirements, organizational policies, and industry best practices in all EH initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor and the IRC.
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, Public Health, Water and Sanitation, or related field.
Minimum of 4 years of experience in implementing WASH projects and 2 years in humanitarian or development settings.
Strong understanding of WASH principles, guidelines, and country WASH and SPHERE standards.
Experience in conducting assessments, developing action plans, and monitoring project implementation.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
Ability to work effectively in a diverse team and multicultural environment.
Competent in Windows, MS office programs, emails and database
Experience in an INGO will be a strong asset
Knowledge in water testing and analysis
Knowledge of South-West and North-West regions, habit and local language.
Good knowledge of technical drawing tools such as Autocad, Archicad, Epanet, Arc Gis
Good skills in Excel and Word
Fluent in spoken and written English, Pidgin English (very well). Knowledge in French language is a plus
