Position: Ecological Monitoring and Forestry officer (2 year FTC)

Job Description
Overview of Role:
This post, reporting to the Central Africa Director, will work alongside GC staff and partners to
support GC Cameroon programme on forestry and wildlife in Cameroon in line with our country
strategy and funded commitments. The post holder will supportGC activities to reduce the impact of
forestry by: working with other team members and partners to implement operational systems
related to minimizing the impacts of forestry on wildlife; supporting production of resources and
trainings to develop capacity within the GC team and partners; supporting wildlife training, surveys,
follow up the implementation of the SMART approach and EathRanger to wildlife surveys and for
wildlife law enforcement activities within forestry concessions. The post-holder will also contribute
to project development, design, delivery and reporting. He/she will assist with maintaining existing
and developing new, relationships and partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
The post will be based at GC’s field office in Djoum, Mintom or Lomie and will work in the main field
sites in the East or South Region with regular national travel as required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Forestry Programme
 Contribute to the implementation of GC Cameroon’s efforts to engage with forestry companies
and responsible government authorities to diminish the impacts of timber exploitation on
wildlife.
 Contribute to the wildlife surveys, inventories, and wildlife management plans in coordination
with companies.
 Assist in training forestry and MINFOF staff in wildlife impact assessment and survey techniques,
including the use of technological data gathering tools and the SMART approach.
 Maintain a GIS database related to GC programme activities and provide GIS support and
training to GC team and partners as appropriate;
 Work with GC staff and partners, as needed, to successfully plan and implement program
activities.
 Be GC Cameroon’s representative and technical specialist on forestry and wildlife issues for the
region.
 Attend relevant national meetings relating to forestry and wildlife issues.
 Work with GC teams to identify and secure funding for forestry and wildlife related projects.
Programme development, co-ordination and support
 Workingwith the Central Africa Director and project managers to ensure successful delivery of
projects to a high standard.
 Support project development and writing of fund raising proposals for law enforcement work as
appropriate.
 Provide technical advice and support to staff and partners, in line with GC’s experience, to
ensure the quality of outputs and maximum impact of the programme in Cameroon.
 Travel to project sites and other localities as necessary for project activities.
 Work with the programme team to build the institutional capacity of local partners.
Reporting and Communications
 Reporting to the Central Africa Director, ensure technical and financial reports to GC, donors and
partners are produced on time and to a professional standard.
 Represent GC at key meetings and workshops and develop GC’s profile in Cameroon and the
wider region as required.
 Assist the Central Africa Director with building and maintaining strong, open and regular
communication with key local partners, and ensure their consultation and inclusion in the design
and implementation of all project activities in Cameroon.

Qualifications & Experience
 A higher degree in a subject related to forestry, conservation/natural resource management or
equivalent level of work experience in a relevant field.
 Proven capacity-building skills, experience in developing and delivering trainings.
 Experience with SMART systems.
 Experience of managing and supporting relationships with relevant partners.
 Experience of technical and financial report writing.
Knowledge
 A good understanding of current national, international and Africa approaches to minimizing the
impacts of forestry on wildlife populations and their ecological role
Skills & Abilities
 Fluent spoken and excellent written French essential.
 Ability to communicate in English desirable.
 A valid driver’s licence and appropriate field training.
 Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
 Good cultural awareness and able to work effectively in different cultural environments.
 Strong organisational skills, with ability to carry out multiple tasks to deadlines.
 Personable and ability to work both within a team and with minimal supervision.
 Motivated.
 Excellent report-writing skills.
Other Requirements
 Able and willing to work long hours and over weekends when required.
 Willing and able to be based at the TRIDOM landscape project sites.
