UNHCR’s Representation in Cameroon covering Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Sao Tome and Principe, is seeking an intern for a six-month internship in its Communications Unit in Yaounde. The internship would suit candidates with interest and studies or experience in communications, media and public outreach, campaigning, and online communication. Familiarity with international affairs, international humanitarian affairs and/or refugee related issues is an asset.
Background:
Since 1950, UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, has helped tens of millions of people restart their lives. Today, a staff of more than 10,000 people in 130 countries continues to help and protect millions of refugees, returnees, internally displaced and stateless people.
In Cameroon, UNHCR works in collaboration with government and partner organizations to maintain access to rights and basic services for over two million forcibly displaced people, including through registration and refugee status determination activities, child protection, gender-based violence prevention and response, facilitating the delivery of civil documents and more. Concurrently, UNHCR searches for durable solutions so refugees and internal displaced people can thrive beyond surviving, by promoting their integration in communities that have welcomed them, encouraging self-sufficiency through livelihood activities, supporting the resettlement of the most vulnerable of refugees, finding third-country complementary pathways for other refugees, and, for those who choose to, facilitating a return to their country of origin in safety and dignity.
The Cameroon Multi-Country Office Communications team provides information on UNHCR’s role protecting and assisting refugees to national and international media outlets, and engages national and international audiences through strategic partnerships, digital outreach, campaigns, and events.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will gain unique knowledge about UNHCR’s global, regional and national role, capabilities, programs, and impact, and the role of communications and outreach in achieving UNHCR’s mandate as they
-    Assist in collecting information, identifying and developing stories about refugees, internally displaced persons and persons at risk of statelessness for UNHCR’s media platforms, including assistance in generating content for social media;
-    Assist in the preparation of print and digital communication materials (web stories, photo essays, factsheets, info graphics etc.), visibility items, and in publication design management;

-    Assist with monitoring national and international media coverage of UNHCR’s work with refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons and people at risk of statelessness in Cameroon;
-    Undertake other projects as needed to further assist the Communications Unit’s work.
Eligibility:
-    Current students or recent graduates (have completed studies within one year of applying from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO) with Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in journalism, communications or related field.
-    Superior command of French and English languages with excellent written and oral communication skills;
-    Working knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite is desired. Knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop is a plus. Proficiency in Canva is a plus.
-    Ability to multi-task and prioritize with minimal supervision. Attention to detail required.
-    Have no direct family ties with a UNHCR staff member (including Temporary Appointment holder) nor with a member of the Affiliate Workforce.
