JOB DESCRIPTION – WASH SPECIALIST TRAINER / LECTURER

Background
The Institute for Humanitarian and Studies (IFP-HS) is a professional training center dedicated to building the capacity of future humanitarian workers and community development actors across Africa.
For over a decade, IFP-HS has partnered with national and international organizations to deliver specialized training in humanitarian principles, protection, community resilience, child safeguarding, and WASH.
As part of its academic expansion for the 2025 academic year, IFP-HS seeks a qualified and experienced WASH Specialist Trainer to lead its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene module, train future humanitarian practitioners, and strengthen the institute’s technical expertise in the field.
Position Summary
The WASH Specialist Trainer will be responsible for designing, delivering, and evaluating training modules in the WASH domain.
He/she will guide learners in understanding the key technical, operational, and strategic aspects of WASH programming in humanitarian and development contexts.
The trainer will also contribute to curriculum development, student mentorship, and research support related to WASH and environmental sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Teaching and Curriculum Development
● Design and deliver theoretical and practical courses in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH).
● Develop training materials, case studies, and simulation exercises aligned with international humanitarian standards (SPHERE, CHS, WHO, UNICEF).
● Introduce students to field-based WASH assessment tools, hygiene promotion approaches (PHAST, CLTS, CHAST), and emergency WASH interventions.
● Update course content based on emerging humanitarian trends and global WASH frameworks.
● Supervise group projects, research assignments, and professional reports related to WASH programming.
2. Capacity Building and Mentorship
● Mentor students and early-career humanitarian professionals pursuing WASH specializations.
● Facilitate interactive workshops, debates, and scenario-based learning to strengthen analytical and operational skills.
● Support students in developing their career pathways in the humanitarian sector, with emphasis on WASH-related roles.
● Provide academic guidance during field internships and community-based practical assignments.
3. Academic Quality and Research Contribution
● Participate in the review and validation of WASH-related curricula.
● Contribute to institutional research on WASH, environmental health, and sustainable development.
● Ensure all training content aligns with IFP-HS’s pedagogical standards and partner organization requirements.
● Collaborate with the Academic Council to enhance the WASH certification track within the Humanitarian Diploma and Master’s programs.
4. Partnership and Representation
● Represent IFP-HS in academic and professional WASH networks.
● Build partnerships with humanitarian agencies (UNICEF, WHO, ICRC, NGOs) for field collaborations and guest lectures.
● Contribute to joint initiatives promoting innovation and research in humanitarian WASH education.
● Participate in national and international forums related to WASH and humanitarian training.
Required Qualifications and Experience
● Master’s degree or higher in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Public Health, Water Resource Management, or related field.
● Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in WASH programming within humanitarian or development organizations.
● Proven experience in training, capacity building, or university-level teaching (preferably in humanitarian or technical fields).
● Strong technical knowledge of SPHERE Standards, CHS, and WASH Cluster coordination mechanisms.
● Familiarity with emergency response frameworks, disease outbreak management, and climate-resilient WASH systems.
● Excellent teaching, communication, and facilitation skills (English and/or French).
● Ability to use digital tools for blended and e-learning (Zoom, Moodle, Google Classroom, PowerPoint, Canva, etc.).

Working Conditions
● Duty Station: Douala (with possible missions to regional field training centers)
● Type of Contract: Consultancy / Fixed-Term Academic Contract (renewable)
● Duration: 12 months renewable based on performance and program needs
● Workload: 03 hours per week (part-time) equivalent for academic coordination role
