Overview of the Role
CHAI Cameroon is seeking a detail-oriented finance professional to provide additional finance capacity for a project involving large-scale trainings and high-volume payments. Reporting to the Finance Lead and working closely with the Program team, the Temporary Project Finance Assistant will process, document, and reconcile project payments in line with CHAI policies, donor requirements, and internal controls. This is a three-month, project-funded, fixed-term position.
Key Responsibilities
Participant and Project Payments
- Review participant lists, attendance records, and supporting documents for completeness, accuracy, and eligibility before payment.
- Prepare and process payments to training participants and other payees once all required approvals and documents are in place.
- Track failed, returned, and outstanding payments and follow up until resolved.
Tracking and Reconciliation
- Maintain project payment trackers and monitor expenditure against the approved budget.
- Reconcile participant payment lists and project transactions against actual payments and clear outstanding items.
- Ensure expenses are correctly coded to the grant, budget line, and activity.
- Support cash requests and forecasts for upcoming activities, and month-end close.
- Share regular status updates on payments processed, pending items, and missing documentation.
Controls and Documentation
- Ensure all transactions comply with CHAI financial policies and approval requirements.
- Flag errors, potential duplicate payments, unusual transactions, or control concerns to the Finance Lead.
- Keep complete, audit-ready payment files (electronic and physical) for each training and activity and support responses to audit or donor queries.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- At least one (1) year of experience in finance or accounting
- Experience with NGOs or donor-funded projects is an advantage.
- Strong Excel skills, including working with large datasets and payment trackers.
- Sound understanding of basic accounting, supporting documentation, and internal controls.
- Excellent attention to detail and organization, with the ability to meet tight deadlines during intensive training periods.
- Professional proficiency in French and English.
- High integrity and discretion in handling financial information.
